South Jersey Horse Rescue was asked at the beginning of the summer 2016 to take two older horses from a woman's property. She had passed away and her grown children were afraid of horses. They said yes, but were told the horses had been taken by another rescue. That fall they received an urgent call from their vet saying she had been called to the property and two horses there were in really bad shape. They scale horses on a body score of 1 to 10 and Smokie was a 1.5. The other rescue had never picked them up and they stayed all summer, barely alive, with very little care. Smokie only had a month to live. They started him on soft warm mash 8 times per day. He has gained weight and is doing much better. Smokie continues to thrive at age 37. He would like some Cosequin joint supplement (a 700g tub lasts 106 days and costs $199.95) and a nice warm midweight waterproof turnout blanket (size 78, $199.95). Link to blanket and to Cosequin
Thank you to Suzanne B., Randa W., Kathryn D., Emily W., Irene J., Dianne E., Marsha G., and Al H. for helping to grant Smokie's wish! $51 more needed!
Special Horses, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization. It is a GuideStar Platinum Participant and has been a Great Nonprofit since 2015. Since 2009, our mission has been to provide outstanding 501(c)(3) equine rescue organizations with fundraising opportunities, marketing assistance, educational opportunities, grant assistance and community outreach. The organizations we support are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming horses in need, and are carefully screened and selected based on their trustworthy reputation, dedication, and excellent service to the animals in their care. Rescuing horses leaves these organizations little time to plan, organize, and execute fundraisers and outreach, and it is the mission of Special Horses to help them help equines in need.
